Glass Installation – Dos and Don’ts

Glass is a beautiful and functional addition to any home or business, but it can also be dangerous if not installed properly. Once the caulk is dry, you can begin sanding it with fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth any rough edges and help the adhesive adhere better. Any bare wood can then be sealed with linseed oil or a clear sealer. This will protect the surface from moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew.

When you’re ready to install the new window, first lay it out on a flat surface and carefully measure to determine its width and height. Subtract 1/8-inch from each measurement to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction of the frame. This will make the pane easier to install and will allow for a tight fit with the frame.

Next, take a putty knife and roll out a rope of compound about 3/8-inch thick. Apply it to the L-shaped space where the frame meets the glass, over the glazing points. Once the putty is in place, press it firmly against the glass and the frame to help it set. If you notice a smear of caulking on the outside of the frame, wipe it down with a damp cloth and leave to cure for 24 hours.

Finally, when you’re satisfied that the glass is secure in the frame and that all of the hardware works smoothly, you can remove the tape and cardboard. Then, clean the area and inspect the glass for any chips or scratches that might have occurred during installation.
