What’s the Difference Between Glass Repair and Replacement?

When you get a cracked or chipped windshield or window, it’s important to have it repaired or replaced right away. But what is the difference between glass repair and replacement? It’s fairly easy to replace old single-pane windows in wood frames, which are held with glazing (a pliable putty that hardens to hold the windowpane in place). First, remove any curtains or blinds from around the window and clear out the area, covering it with a sheet of plastic or cloth for protection. If the old glazing is nailed into place, use a pull-type paint scraper or a hammer to loosen and then remove it. Afterward, you can prepare the area for the new glass by sanding away rough edges or removing old caulk with a chisel. You should also clean the grooves where the old glazing was with a scraper, and remove any metal glazing points that may be present.

Then, you should measure the opening where the old pane was, and then take this measurement to your local hardware store so that they can cut a piece of new glass to fit that opening. Once you have the new pane, you should test-fit it in the frame and make sure that it is snug. Then, apply a thin coat of glazing compound to the backside of the glass where it meets the window frame, using your finger to smooth and press it in, and then to bed the glass into the compound.

You should repeat the process on the other side of the glass, and then you’re ready to install the new pane in the frame. If your frame has a sash, you should then close and secure the window to prevent air and water leaks. If your windows are older and you’re noticing cracks in the glass or fogging between panes, it might be worth considering a complete window replacement.

A full replacement can improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the historical integrity of an older home. In addition, you can also save money by eliminating the cost of buying and installing a new window.
