How to Repair a Windshield

A windshield is a crucial safety component of your vehicle. It is designed to protect you from flying debris and prevent you from being thrown into the car’s interior in the event of an accident. Your windshield is also a significant contributor to your visibility while driving. If you have a chip or crack in your windshield, it is important to get it repaired as soon as possible.

Many auto insurance companies will cover the cost of a windshield repair, which costs less than a full replacement, if it is done within a certain time frame. If you do not get your windshield repaired as soon as possible, the crack or chip can spread, making it impossible to drive safely. In addition, it is illegal to drive a car with a damaged windshield in some states.

There are three common methods for repairing a cracked or chipped windshield. The first is to apply a film or patch. This type of repair is often sold in do-it-yourself repair kits, but professional auto glass specialists use more advanced tools and resins that can make a windshield appear nearly invisible. Another method involves injecting a clear, curable resin into the windshield to fill the chips and cracks. This method dramatically reduces the appearance of the damage and strengthens the glass. Finally, the technician may buff the area to make the repair nearly invisible.

A third option is to drill the damaged area and then remove the old windshield adhesive with a special tool called a dremel or grinder. This process creates a clean surface for a new windshield. The technician will then use a special bonding agent to adhere the new windshield to the frame of your vehicle. After the technician removes the tape and bonding agent, the windshield will be inspected to ensure that it is a good fit with the body of your vehicle. There should be no air leaks and the windshield should be flush with the body of your vehicle.

Measuring your window’s height is also a critical step when replacing it. Using a tape measure, start at the left side window jamb and move to the center of the glass, then the right side window jamb. Obtaining the window’s height will allow you to accurately compare the size of your new windshield with your old one, making sure it is a perfect fit. In addition, it will help you avoid buying a replacement that is too small or too large for the frame and window sill.
