How to Cut Glass to Size Safely and Easily

When you’re cutting glass to size, a little misstep can ruin a project. You’re working with a sharp, dangerous tool and you’re trying to follow precise lines that can’t be changed once you score the glass. The slightest miscalculation can cause the glass to break in a different place than intended, leaving you with a piece of glass too small or large for your frame. The best way to avoid these mishaps is to be prepared and follow a few basic guidelines.

Clean the Glass

Start with a clean surface before beginning to work on your glass panel. A sheet of glass that is dirty or has any other debris stuck to it will make it difficult for the cutter to cut and break through it. It will also make it difficult to follow the lines you’ve drawn or traced on the glass.

Prepare the Work Area

Lay a soft but thick enough cloth on your work area to collect any glass dust that may fall off during the cutting process. This will keep your work area tidy and safe, especially if you have small children around.

Apply Glass Cutting Lubricant

A dab of glass cutting oil lubricant applied to the surface of your glass before scoring it can help to prevent scratches to the edge of your glass and to keep the cut as smooth and even as possible. You can also add a small amount to the cutting wheel itself for easier scoring and to reduce heat build-up that may cause cracks during breaking.

Line the Glass Up with a Straight Edge

Once you’ve lined up your glass and your cutter with the marks you’ve made on it, it’s time to begin. Begin rolling the cutter across the surface of the glass in a fluid motion without stopping, applying moderate pressure. Try to apply the same level of pressure as you work; this will help to ensure consistent results and a better quality final product.

Use the Straight Edge to Guide the Cutting Wheel

Once your cutter is over the mark you’ve made, carefully roll it towards you to cut through the glass along that mark. As you continue to roll the cutter, apply pressure evenly across the entire length of the glass. If you notice any cracks or distortions to the glass as it is being cut, increase or decrease your pressure levels and re-check your markings and alignments.

Snap the Glass

Once you’ve finished your hairline cut, all that remains is to snap the glass at the mark and you’ll have a perfect panel of glass that is the exact size for your frame. If you used the pliers method of breaking, put some cloth or scraps between the plier jaws to reduce any chance of cutting yourself while you’re trimming off residual slivers or chips with a sharp tool. This will also help to protect your pliers from damage. The best part is that the whole process can be done from home, saving you the cost of having to pay for a professional to do it for you!
