Tips For Glass Installation

glass installation

Glass is a beautiful material that can improve your home or office in many ways. It adds light, makes things look bigger and brighter, and it creates an atmosphere that inspires productivity. However, installing glass is a bit more complicated than it looks and mistakes can be costly to correct. This article will discuss some factors that need to be considered when installing glass.

Whether you are replacing window glass or constructing a new shelf, the first step is to determine how much weight it can hold. The best way to do this is by using a stud finder or measuring and marking the location of wall studs. Usually, shelves that are to be anchored into wall studs can hold up to 15 pounds without the need for additional support brackets. However, if you are planning on installing a shelf that will be supporting heavy items like potted plants or books, then it will be necessary to install shelf anchors into the studs.

Once you have determined how much your shelf can handle, it is important to prepare the site before starting work. It is recommended that you use a power sander to remove any rough edges of the wood where it will come into contact with the glass and to ensure the rabbet has a smooth surface that can support the weight of the glass. It is also a good idea to apply some linseed oil to the rabbet with a rag to help the putty adhere to it.

The next step is to install the glazing points around the perimeter of the frame. This will create a bedding for the glass that will keep it from sliding off the frame or falling out of the opening. To do this, roll a thin rope of putty and insert it into the rabbet. Press firmly with the tip of a putty knife, slightly compressing it and bedding the glass. Press a glazing point into the wood every 6 inches or so around the perimeter of the glass.

Finally, the vinyl stops on the outside of the frame should be removed and replaced after the glass has been placed in the frame. This will help ensure that the edge of the glass rests perfectly on the putty bed, and this step is crucial to a tight seal of the window.
